Large-Scale Public Art

Sean Orlando creates large-scale public sculptures and site-specific installations for civic spaces, parks, transit corridors, campuses, museums, and cultural institutions.

His work combines artistic vision, engineering and fabrication expertise, and community collaboration to create monumental artworks that become lasting landmarks within the public realm. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Orlando works with municipalities, architects, developers, arts commissions, and cultural organizations across the United States to design and realize ambitious public art projects. Each project is developed in response to its site—its history, ecology, and community—resulting in sculptural works that invite curiosity, exploration, and shared experience.

Working with Cities & Communities

Public art plays an important role in shaping the identity of a place. Sean Orlando approaches each project as a collaborative process with city agencies, arts commissions, community stakeholders, and project teams.

Early phases of a project often include conversations with planners, curators, and community representatives to understand the character and goals of a site. These insights inform the conceptual direction of the sculpture, ensuring the final artwork reflects the cultural and environmental context of its location.

Orlando’s projects frequently explore themes connected to local history, infrastructure, natural systems, or the spirit of exploration and innovation within a community. The goal is to create artwork that resonates with the public while contributing meaningfully to the identity of the space.

Public Art Process

Large-scale public art projects require both creative vision and careful coordination. Sean Orlando works closely with his fabrication studio, Engineered Artworks, to guide each project from early concept through final installation. The process typically includes:

Concept Development

Initial sketches, research, and visual studies explore ideas that respond to the site and the goals of the project.

Design & Engineering

Detailed design development and structural engineering ensure the sculpture meets safety, durability, and fabrication requirements.

Fabrication

Through Engineered Artworks, Orlando collaborates with a team of artists, fabricators, and engineers to construct the work using specialized metal fabrication and sculptural techniques.

Logistics & Installation

Transportation and installation are coordinated with Artifact Logistics, a specialty art transport and rigging company Orlando runs experienced in moving and installing large-scale artworks.

Completion

The finished sculpture becomes a permanent or long-term landmark within the public space, designed to endure both physically and culturally.
